a start up entrepreneur and philadelphia native, jacob ross had enough of the silicon valley despite his filled portfolio with start ups and his crowl jewel called bookd, a ride share and delivery app that rivals uber. in early 2019, the thirty-two year old rocked the tech world by announcing he was selling his bookd shares. he set his sights on something more personal and would be taking on a new venture - affordable housing for millennials.
in 2018, an eight story building was purchased in philadelphia's thriving washington square west. preserving its charm, his vision came life converting three main floors into common areas along with state of the art amenities. the remaining five floors were transformed into residental units.
the announcement of this type of housing garnered mass media attention. when the application was released and the mention of "all credits scores welcomed", a quarter of a million were submitted. only 75 were accepted. with the signing of a lease, young professionals will be paying a reduced rent and a commitment of eight volunteer hours a month. if this community experiment succeeds, this will be the first phase in a nationwide expansion.
